Add a CommentEnjoy this film. Minnie Driver is great in it.
Lucky, lucky Minnie Driver -- torn between Tom Wilkinson, who is really quite fetching here, and could make a tree stump sexually appealing, and lusty, freaky young Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, all on the beautiful island of Skye. I could wish they were luckier in their leading lady; perhaps someone who mugs less, but Minnie gives it her all. Young Florence Hoath takes the part of Clementina and runs with it. The story is both clever, and disappointing arbitrary. Ms. Driver's wardrobe is strangely goth for the 1800s.
A visual stunner. But the cast & story even surpass the beauty of this film. Wilkinson & Driver are wonderfully fleshed out in their characters: Driver completely seduces playing the sexually inexperienced but emotionally overpowering Mary to Wilkinson's lonely but controlled early Victorian gentleman. Their chemistry is phenomenal. Each has their vulnerabilities. A great balance of all aspects, particularly the pacing of the story which left me in suspense of what would ultimately unfold.
