"Based on the remarkable true story of World War II hero Irena Sendler, who rescued over 2,500 Jewish children during the German occupation of Poland . As a social worker, Irena had access to the Warsaw ghetto, making it possible for her to rescue the daughter of a Jewish friend and safely hide the young girl with a Catholic family. Realising that thousands of children were still in danger, Irena recruited sympathetic friends and co-workers to smuggle children out. At great personal risk, she devised extraordinary schemes to sneak the children by Nazi guards. Not a single child she rescued was ever betrayed or discovered by the Nazis. Often called "The Female Schindler" Sendler not only saved thousands of lives, but also countless generations of their descendants."--Container.

Add a CommentWow! What an amazing story and a very watchable biopic portraying the true life story of Irena Sendler. Highly recommend!
Excellent film which demonstrates what can be accomplished by one Polish woman working to save Jewish children from the Nazis. Recommend Kristi & Abby Tabby
Excellent DVD, which shows courage and conviction in face of persecution, "love your neighbor" we are told and the neighbor is anyone who we come across our paths during our sojourn on earth. In her case the down trodden and persecuted Jews. The movie was very realistically done, and shows how depraved mankind can be in the face of oppression and a bad leader. Strongly recommend watching to learn history and courage displayed in unusual circumstances
Irena was very brave women. I loved the movie and the book"Life in a Jar"She was nominated for the Nobel prize but Obama who did nothing at all to deserve it won it instead.
TERRIFIC movie!!!!
A potentially good movie suffers from poor production. We found the dialog was very hard to hear and sub-titles weren't an option.
This movie is amazing! it gives such a heart-wrenching picture of the life of a Jewish family during the holocaust. It was sad and terrible, but with such wonderful people in every scene. This director did an amazing job with this film. I've watched it more than once.
Within its made-for-TV bounds, Irena Sendler is a surprisingly hard-hitting story of what can be done by a few brave, clever people. Anna Paquin's face is inexpressive, for an actress; but on the other hand, she strikes me as a person who could get away with a clandestine operation like this. The Extras fill in some gaps as to what happened during and after the period of the film, but many threads are left dangling. Be prepared to cry and want to hug your mother.

Irena Sendler is a humanitarian hero whose unselfish bravery changed lives forever. She died in Poland in 2008, at the age of 98. I wonder if she was ever reunited with any of the children she helped save and if any of them are still alive today.
This is a compelling movie and Anna Paquin fully immerses herself in the role.
