Very entertaining movie. You have to enjoy all the characters that Brendan Gleeson plays. The movie is worth watching for his performance alone.

You've probably seen this type of film before where two law enforcement officers whose styles clash must work together. This one is done very well, though, and has the added benefit of being set in Ireland. By the end of the movie, I found myself cheering and shouting at the screen (I was watching it at home so it's okay); this is not a typical reaction for me to have to a film. Brendan Gleeson is wonderful, as always. The Guard is rated R for pervasive language, some violence, drug material and sexual content.

Well-done dramedy which has the advantage of starring Brandon Gleeson as a hardened Garda policeman who still believes in right & wrong and doesn't suffer fools lightly. The interplay between him and Don Cheadle is what makes the film memorable.

5 Stars!
Superb characters of Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle. The underbelly of Irish culture is exposed for all to see. Nobody is safe from the quick jabs! Enjoy!

Political Incorrect police drama but hilarious throughout with a great finish. Turn on the CC even when the natives were not speaking Gaelic.

I sought this one out after just watching McDonagh's current film with Gleeson, "Calvary", which was brilliant. As was this. Good stuff.

Really enjoyed this film of international // cooperation \\ between an Irish copper, Gleeson, and the American G-man, Cheadle. Excellent acting, excellent chemistry between the actors who played off each other quite nicely.

Excellent film. Gleeson and Cheadle are wonderful. Another intelligent movie by John McDonagh. (It's so nice to find non "Hollywood" movies.)

An irreverent comedy that pitches an unorthodox policeman against a group of philosophical drug-smugglers. Definitely worth seeing - except, of course, if you are humorless and afraid of sharp language, in which case you should continue to hide under your bed. The folks who rated this less than 3 stars should stick to Disney flicks. The reviewer who described this as having a weak plot and "often resorts to stereotypes to get some laughs" is completely wrong.

Hilarious, suspenseful police-buddy comedy between Brendan Gleeson's "unconventional" Connemara police sergeant and Don Cheadle's privileged, straitlaced FBI agent. Witty dialogue and excellent acting, and a character-driven plot driven by very colorful, but never stereotyped, characters, including a Nietzsche-quoting sociopath. Highly recommended.

Warning: may be offensive:

Boyle: I thought only black lads were drug dealers.
Everett: I'm sorry, what?
Boyle: I thought only black lads were drug dealers. And Mexicans. They have a word for them.
Everett: There's a word for you too, sir, but I'm not gonna go into that now. Anyway, as I was saying, these men are highly dangerous. And if...
Boyle: Mules! Drug mules!

Boyle: I do wonder what street it is
you're buying your cocaine on, because it's not the same street as I'm buying my cocaine on.

Killer 1: Didn't think anybody interesting was Welsh.
Killer 2: Dylan Thomas.
Killer 1: Like I said.

Killer 1: Ah. "You will not get the crowd to cry hosanna
Killer 2: "until you ride into town on an ass." Nietzsche. Yeah, that's a good one.
Killer 1: Good quote. Nice one.

Warning - spoiler ... Warning - spoiler ... Warning - spoiler:

Everett: Lost a good man.
Boy: They never recovered a body, did they? It's a big sea out there.
Everett: He's dead. Either burned up or drowned.
Boy: But he was a really good swimmer.
Everett: I'm sorry, son, that was just bullshit. He was never in the Olympics.
Boy: Well, maybe so. Sure, it's easy enough to look up, anyways.
===
Killer 1: Why's it always me, though?
Killer 2: Cos you're a psychopath.
Killer 1: I'm a sociopath, not a psychopath. They explained that to me in Mountjoy.

Warning: may be offensive:

Boyle: Now I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, these men are armed and dangerous, and you being an FBI agent you're more used to shooting at unarmed women and children...

Boyle: I'm Irish. Racism is part of my culture.

Boyle: I don't want to see it. Babies all look the same. The only time a baby doesn't look like every other baby is when it's a really ugly baby. So unless you're about to show me a photo of a really ugly baby then I don't want to see it.

Boyle: This is a Gaelic speaking region. Did they not teach you that at Langley?
Everett: No, they did not teach us that at Langley. For the simple fact that Langley is the CIA, you idiot, not the FBI!
