Joy Harjo, one of our most talented poets, who now holds the title of the first Native American U. S. Poet Laureate has written a hardscrabble memoir in a landscape of dreams, magic and Native American transcendence as only she can do!

Very ordinary writing.

Follow Harjo's river of memories in this beautifully written and lyrical memoir. As a child, she recognized the beauty of her mother's music. She came to see poetry as "singing on paper."

It's tough to find words to describe this very poetic memoir: eloquent, breathtaking, powerful, uplifting. Joy Harjo is a poet, a mystic, and a warrior. I wonder if everyone who reads this will be so moved, or if it's one of those rare gems that's perfect just for a certain someone. Survivors, women of color, mothers, poets and writers should certainly give it a try. I expect that you will not be disappointed.

Harjo writes eloquently about difficult times.

Amazing and engaging, just like her personality. Heard her give a reading at UIUC that was entertaining and spellbinding.

Having read her poetry and been to a couple of readings she did, I was quite interested in learning more about Joy Harjo. This memoir helped me understand her and her work more. It is moving and powerful. I highly recommend it.
