The deep forests of Poland and Belorussia are the domain of the occupying Germans during World War II. The three Bielski brothers go into the forests to undertake the impossible task of foraging for food, weapons and survival, not just for themselves but for a large mass of Polish Jews fleeing from the German war machine. The brothers, living with the fear of discovery, must contend with neighboring Soviet partisans and deciding whom to trust. They take on the responsibility of guardians and motivate hundreds of women, men, children and elderly to join their fight against the Nazi regime while hiding in makeshift homes in the dark, cold, unforgiving forest. At the same time, the brothers turn a band of war defectors into powerful freedom fighters. Based on true events.

A good but not great biopic. Not a masterpiece but a competent effort.

Excellent film about Jewish resistance to the Nazis during the Holocaust. The story of the Bielski brothers and their "guerilla war" against the Nazis was only discovered during the 1990s, and it's hard to believe, when Tuvia Bielski was found, he was driving a taxi in New York City!

Brutal story as to be expected, although it would have been even more brutal if they'd spent more time on the women's stories. Even so, I think the filmmakers did a pretty good job of trying to show everyone's point of view (except the Nazis but that's okay--they don't need any more speaking time).

This is one of the best films on WW II told from the point of view of one of the surviving large Jewish resistance groups "The Bielski Partisans". It is a well done screen play relating the story told in the book "Defiance : the Bielski Partisans" by Tec Nechama which I wish the Santa Monica Public Library carried in book form not just audio book form on a internet site that is only limited to certain types of computers. In any event this movie should be seen by anyone who is studying the World Wars as an introduction to the book and other scholarly work on the Jewish resistance and their struggle for survival as a people during the war.

I have to disagree with the other posts. This role was well beyond the acting abilities of Daniel Craig. He has the same facial expression for every sequence - whether seeing his parents shot, falling in love, fighting with his brother. The man cannot act. The movie is long but entertaining. Far more interesting are the bonus features where they interview the children of the people the brothers saved and you get a real idea of what the experience was like. So, skip the movie and check out the bonus features!

This was a moving and well filmed movie. It stayed true to the roots of the actual historical period and events. The casting was excellent; especially Daniel Craig.

Brilliantly cast film. It was amazing the casting of the brothers. Honestly i did laugh at the few moments of brief comedy relief... i cried at some well done painful scenes. i held my breath at times, and once i even cheered like when i was a little kid at the cinema! The fact it was a true story made it all the better. In the mood for a good fight till the end movie and this is perfect for you!
