In The Mars Mystery, investigative archaeologist Graham Hancock treats our growing knowledge of Martian topography as a Rosetta Stone we can use to decode mysteries as old as the human imagination. He examines the current landscape of Mars and discovers evidence that the planet was once home to a lush environment of dense atmo-sphere and flowing rivers, lakes, and oceans. He asks questions, based on growing evidence, that cannot be dismissed: Has Mars ever sustained higher forms of life? How might the secret history of Mars be intertwined with Earth's own past and future? In his most riveting and revealing book yet, Hancock points to the intriguing possibility that ancient Martian civilization is communicating with us through the remarkable structures it left behind. Megaliths found on the parched shores of Cydonia, a former Martian ocean, mirror the geometrical conventions of the pyramids at Egypt's Giza necropolis. Especially startling is a Sphinx-like structure depicting a face with distinguishable diadem, teeth, mouth, and Egyptian-style headdress. Might there be a connection between the structures of Egypt and those of Mars? Yet, as intriguing as scientists all over the world find the Cydonian discovery, NASA continues to balk at taking a more detailed look at the site and has veiled previous photographs and studies in a web of equivocation. In The Mars Mystery, Hancock makes a strong case that NASA is motivated by a lingering Cold War mentality and a fear that evidence of alien life will have destabilizing political, economic, and social consequences. In exploring the traces left by the Martian civilization and the cosmic cataclysm that may have ended it, The Mars Mystery is both an illumination of our ancient past and a warning which we still have time to heed about our ultimate fate.

The photos of Mars in this book can very well be doctored. The athmosphere of Mars has an air pressure of 1% only of Earth's and not breatheable, and there are dust storms of 200 miles per hour. The pyramids are arranged in a geometrical form so as to evoque the idea of Euclyd's 47th Theorem of the right-angle triangles. They cannot be natural formations, there is so much regularity in the pattern, and one cannot imagine any living organism being able to build them. All this may be a hoax to tantalize the public. Recently it was announced in the media that in 2023 a one-way Mars expedition will take place, to create a colony there. There is a book by Jim Keith titled: "Mind Control and UFOs - Casebook On Alternative Three." In that book he writes about indirect evidence that such colonies were probably created about two decades ago, with people sent on mysterious one-way missions. There have been preparations for such missions starting several decades ago, with people living for long periods in closed systems, where everything is recycled and they grew their own food. Allegedly the best crop for yielding much food in a small space is tomatoes, which can yield 200 kilos per sq metre, using liquid plant food and solar energy. OK, so this book of Hancock is interesting, but one must use some critical thinking. I guess, Hancock also wrote this statement in this book about asteroids: "There is a dark force in the Universe, which, every time one (man) could start to contemplate, throws in an obstacle to prevent it." (These are not the exact words.) Now, what or who is that "Dark Force?" The pyramids of Ghiza are replicas of stars in the Orion Constellation.

I battled with this rather heavy read in the beginning – ‘The Mars Mystery’ by Graham Hancock. There was simply so much technical and scientific material and data to absorb. While I considered putting this book aside after 20 pages, my interest increased perhaps after 25 pages and I elected to try and finish this book and I am glad that I did. The author walks the reader through the history of several Russian and American probes sent to Mars over many years and provided the reader with: research results, described improved technology used, and provided the comments and beliefs expressed by many world renowned scientists on the Mystery of Cydonia. It is an area on Mars that has what could be a possible mask or face on a large stone structure/formation. In addition, there are simply too many other Pyramid like structures and other formations that seem to be artificially constructed and distributed in specific mathematical patterns to ignore. Mr. Hancock implies that NASA ignored and/or covered up the possibility that the mask and the Pyramids could be real and what that would mean to mankind. Certainly the question as to whether the mask and the Pyramids are artificially constructed or merely a coincidence will be known in the next 10-50 years as more research is done on Mars and a manned mission is finally attempted. We can only hope that such a mission would include investigating Cydonia. This book should really be considered at least two books in one. The second part of this book deals with bringing to light the many asteroid and comet impacts that planets in our solar system and the earth has sustained over millions of years. Scientists generally discover about five new major impact locations on the earth every year. The Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) impact (Chicxulub crater), an object believed to 10 Km in diameter which struck the Yucatan peninsula at a speed of 30 Km per second 65 million years ago killed off the dinosaurs. This proposal has been generally accepted by the world’s scientific community today. It is also estimated that this major impact resulted in a loss of 75 percent of all species and a staggering 99.99 percent of all individual animals then living on earth [reference Chapter 18]. Other notable impacts include: the twin Steinheim and Reis craters in Germany (46 and 24 Km in diameter) 15-million years old; the twin Kamensk and Gusev craters in Russia both 65-million years old; and the twin Clearwater Lakes craters in CANADA in northern Quebec which are 290 million years old. These impacts and countless others both ancient and some in the last 10,000 years are described in detail in [Chapter 18-22]. The other major item of note is the fact that every year the earth has many, near-earth-misses, most of which we never hear about. One comes to realize that with very little notice, our life on earth could come to an instant end. The comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (S-L 9) that broke up into 21 fragments and struck Jupiter in 1994 offered humanity a glimpse through the gates of hell. While this book presents many challenges, it is and well worth the effort for those historians, space enthusiasts, and budding scientists (astrophysicists, astronomers, mathematicians, geologists, and paleontologists) among us. One appeal that this book tries to impart on the reader is that we need to convince world leaders that it is merely a matter of time before our planet is struck by a major comet and that world leaders should be preparing to repel any such attack on mankind. To ignore this warning by so many world renounce scientists is extremely short sighted and foolish. Regretfully, the Library only has one copy of this book in 2013-04. Senior Doctor-at-Bass! D. A.
