This book of the celebrated author is not really well-written; just OK. What really angers me in this book for young readers, which is supposed to be educational, is the shocking ignorance of the author, copy editor, and the publisher who let these lines to appear the book -".. we all ran out to the main street of the town, waving flags and signing 'God Save the Queen.' ".
Remember that this singing happens in England, right after WW2, when there was a king - George VI. I mention it just in case you grew up reading books by such authors like Jane Yolen.
