1715. New Providence Island is a lawless territory, controlled by notorious pirate captains. The most feared is Captain Flint. As the British Navy returns to exterminate Flint and his crew, another side of him emerges. He allies himself with Eleanor Guthrie, daughter of the local kingpin, to ensure their survival. Many opponents stand in their way: rival captains; Eleanor's father; and John Silver, recently recruited onto Flint's crew, who constantly undermines his captain's agenda.

Outstanding series. If you need your buckles swashed, this is the series for you.

Whoo! Just finished season 1 and can't wait for season 2. Like others here, I could do with a LOT fewer scenes watching whores at work, but I perservered because I'd heard it gets better, and it does, the scriptwriting definitely picks up as it goes along. For a show with this much blood (yeah, I get it, violent society, very violent, right, please stop...) there's a surprising number of laugh-out-loud moments, and some characters I really cared for (past tense, spoiler alert... violent and dangerous world, don't forget). The plot hums along with mysterious motives, secrets, conspiracies, and tension. Who wouldn't love a show on a pirate ship, really? The hero is a dream, he reads AND he can cook! The costumes and set are as good as any movie. And the popcorn you set aside during the stomach-churning parts? Just wait -- eventually, the big-movie action gets going, and things blow up.

Action! Explosions! Betrayal! Love affairs! Pirates! Oh my...what else could you want in a series? (Think season 1 is great? Just wait until season 2...whoa...!)

What a ride! Awesome explosions, great acting, and it's loosely based on some true characters. What more do you want? Perfect for summer binge watching.

My spouse and I loved this swashbuckling series. If you're open minded and grown up enough to handle the nudity and swearing then you may enjoy the complexity of the plot and characters. If you find swearing and nudity offensive, then pass on this. I found it interesting that so many viewers were unaware that the "F" word was actually used quite frequently in the UK since the 1500's, so it wasn't out of context for this series. Yes, prostitution was a profitable living for many women, so this again was within context for the series. We found season 2 really picks up on the plot and adventure. I enjoyed this series for its realistic treatment of its characters. This isn't a Disney movie version of pirates. Loved it!

Much as I love a swash buckling story this series had very little to hold my attention. Lots of nudity I assume to cover up the lack of good acting & I absolutely question the use of the fuck word used so much in the 1600s.

The story's premise (prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island) and production set (filmed at Cape Town) sounded and looked great and it is addicting to see how the characters would evolve to those in the classic adventure of buccaneers. Meanwhile, why the excess use of the F-word and absence of the proverbial pirate colloquialism.

I love this genre of swashbuckling movie but cannot say that I like this particular series ....... so far anyway. I, like bitsysmom, could not take more than 10 minutes. Unfortunately just another formulaic series that rely on gratuitous sex and meaningless mayhem to make up for a lack of substance. The female frontal nudes scenes and profanity are neither necessary or helpful. They add no value to the limping story line and simply show that yet again women are marginalized. I have heard that season 2 gets better, but I am not prepared to hang in there.

What a fabulous find. Thank you for adding this work to the collection. I've just got to reserve a copy of the next bit.

Barlow read from the book Meditations by Marcus Aurelius:
Be like a rocky promontory against which the restless surf continuously pounds; it stands fast while the churning sea is lulled to sleep at its feet. I hear you say, “How unlucky that this should happen to me!” No at all! Say instead, “How lucky I am that I am not broken by what has happened and am not afraid of what is about to happen. The same blow might have struck any one, but not many would have absorbed it without capitulation and complaint.

Flint: When the king brands us pirates, he doesn’t mean to make us adversaries; he doesn’t mean to make us criminals. He means to make us monsters. For that’s the only way his God-fearing, tax-paying subjects can make sense of men who keep what is theirs and fear no one.

Max: The world is so full of surprises. Let it surprise you.

Flint: Friends...brothers...the prize that you and I have been pursuing is L'Urca de Lima. The Hulk. A prize of almost unimaginable value. Now with this page securely in our possession, we can begin our hunt and we will succeed. No matter the cost. No matter the struggle. I will see that prize is yours. I'm not just gonna make you rich. I'm not just gonna make you strong. I'm gonna make you the princes of the New World!

Gates: Flint’s made you more money than any captain here.
Scott: But lately he hasn't.
Gates: Well, that will change.

Vane: No man is rich who could make more by doing less.

Gates: My fault. That was my fault. When I said we would need to keep our tempers in check, I failed to clarify that we would need to do so for the duration of the meeting. Entirely my fault.

Flint: It requires an intolerable sacrifice.
Barlow: To accept a pardon?
Flint: To apologize! ... They took everything from us. Then they call me a monster? The moment I sign that pardon, the moment that I ask for one, I proclaim the world that they were right. This ends when I grant them my forgiveness, not the other way around.

Flint: Why won't I just kill you afterwards?
Silver: Three weeks is a long time. We might be friends by then.

Billy: How can you just pretend you have no doubts about any of this?
Flint: Years of practice? There's always doubt, Billy. No sane man would deny that. No good captain would acknowledge it.
