Finally, a children's story about empathy for animals that discusses animals as they actually behave, not how we pretend they do (e.g. cute, for our entertainment).
Her dad has the difficult task of explaining to Phoebe why a fox would attack one of her chickens. Rich, colorful illustrations create a safe and comforting world from which to look at the circle of life. I particularly liked that the story ends on a happy and more hopeful note. Good choice for a child who is beginning to have questions about death.
