Extremely strange series. I had to watch the first episode twice to try to make sense of this. Just finished the second episode and it is so weird, I think I am wasting my time. This jumps all over the place and then they throw in a nude man walking out of the bathroom (I think it's the bathroom). It just does not add anything to this story. I have continued watching this series. I'm on the third disk now and there is so much that does not make any sense and so much use of the "F" word, often several times in the same sentence. EXAMPLE: I cannot think of any child the age of 9 or 10 who would climb through the bedroom window and walk barefoot and shirtless through the arctic snow. This is too peculiar to contemplate! The second bare feet hit the snow or the shirtless chest felt the cold air the individual would feel the pain! What is the child doing in the enclosed chamber? Did I miss something? Is that supposed to regrow healthy tissue on his frostbitten feet? The scene with the chubby sick girl, what was that all about? Without spoiling anything the scene I am referring to is after she has been sick for some time and then gets out of bed and has a confrontation with the lady (is the older lady her mother? Is the boyfriend her teacher or her father?) What a sick plot this is. Gruesome and bloody scenes. Yet I see many 4 star comments. Well, I watched Fortitude until the end. Even watched the Bonus clips, it is a science fiction type of story so of course it doesn't make sense. I have to admire the actors, makeup artist and the sets and all the work put into this, but I would not recommend this series. Just not my type of story.

Somewhere in a frozen fantasy the logic and resolution are sure to be just around the corner. Meanwhile strange things happen, and then more strange things happen, and yet again more more more. Truly this would be a David Lynch goes arctic genre. It is a long drawn out process which can be a dream who those who enjoy being on the edge of the chair for extended periods. Very difficult to suss out the winners and losers, the monsters versus the misfits, and then there are the other themes of people just being people, family life, and life in a wild place. A dash of horror, a dollop of science, some stellar cast and acting all stirred up together.

Fortitude's story and setting held my interest, but the series is too gruesome for me. The performances are very good. There is an entire town of characters and the plot is complex, so it can be challenging to keep track. The show is dark, bleak and horrific. I wouldn't recommend watching it in the middle of winter unless you need assurance that there are colder places. There is a second season, and I will probably watch it after enjoying some much lighter TV. Fortitude is for mature audiences only and contains violence, gore, profanity, sex and nudity.

Fortitude is a very suspenseful, original piece of work. The acting, writing and production values are all top notch.I found myself riveted.I was on the edge of my seat. It's very solemn and moving.I'm happy that I found this to enjoy. It's shocking and quite sad but amazingly good overall.

It's moody, it's dark. It's the perfect antidote for too much sunshine. The characters are all flawed, How fabulous in Stanley Tucci?! And who can beat the creepy mammoths? If you grew up loving BBC mysteries, and enjoy some Walking Dead, you will love this. And the scenery is amazing, by the way. Iceland just moved up a notch in the places I must see.

Exceptional photography and style raise the horror genre to a classy new level. Great location shots in a remote town in Iceland! Great writing and acting enthralled me throughout, slowly revealing multiple gripping mysteries, intriguing enough to get me through the graphic violence. The film plums deeply into the darkest recesses of human psychology on the coldest edge of civilization. We get through it by identifying with the compelling, complex characters grappling with ethical questions and moral dilemmas.

Lots of atmosphere, decent acting by good cast + unique location, but tedious story and much, much too long. It's you time, but I'd say, don't waste it on this one!

Implausible, formulaic and strung-out too long. The writer(s) surely wrote a list of elements that were needed to capture people's attention and then wove those together with threads that don't hold up. Only one character that was remotely likable. Not worth the gargantuan effort to see this through to the end.

great TV program.. If you are looking for mystery, horror, drama, and good acting this is a BBC for you.. There is a big difference between American TV and BBC TV.. You can see that from the comments.. People who want lots of blood, cars crashing, and a simple plot, this is not the program for you.. If you want something that pulls you in slowing this is for you.. I would suggest you watch it in the summer all snow will help you stay cool.

Fortitude is what you'll need to stick with this garbled whatever. I lasted to the last two episodes and just got sick of it. Two many plot lines, pun. And half the stuff is not dealt with properly. Echoes of John Carpenter's The Thing, you know, the rerun of the real Thing. More like a soap-opera that goes on, and on, and on. Or should I say merrygoround.

- I've ordered the lutefisk.
* Good choice.
- Well, I thought I'm leaving in a couple days time. Might as well find out the truth about the lutefisk.
* Have you ever shot a man?...
The truth about the lutefisk...is you should never eat the lutefisk.

Markus: Shall I tell you something very interesting about this place?
Eugene: Sure.
Markus: You cannot die here. Or be buried here. Those are the laws. Because anything that is buried never decays. There are bodies in the cemetery that still have plague in them.
Eugene: Plague? Mm-hmm. Wow.
Markus: This place is a forensic treasure house.

In Fortitude, there's two fundamental rules. You have to have a roof over your head and you have to be able to provide for yourself, so it follows everyone's got a job, no one is poor, so there's no stealing and there's no crime. Everybody's always happy.

Eric took me up onto the glacier in a tent-- or more a bivouac, really. And the temperature fell to minus 30. So that night, we saw the most spectacular Aurora Borealis I'd ever seen. "The fireworks of the gods," as we called it. The heavens singing. You can actually hear them, you know, the Northern Lights, outside the city. And now we are building a hideaway in the ice. We are building a hotel hewn into the glacier itself, where lovers of the wilderness, lovers of the Northern Lights, or just lovers can witness the wildest things they'll ever see from the safest place on earth.
