A strong, strong story, well scripted and acted, that remains with you long after you finish watching it.

This is not your mother's romance, and it's probably not yours, either. By the mid-18th century, the divide between men and women was so wide, that gentlemen could be devils (including rapists, robbers and murderers, in some circumstances), and ladies could be, or were expected to be, angels, and yet both moved in the same "good society". How could these opposites come together, at least long enough to have children? Well, I guess opposites attract, as they do here, to the devastation of all concerned. Saskia is a slightly brighter and tougher Clarissa than in the novel. I don't buy Sean as an English aristocrat, but otherwise he's a smooth ladykiller. Sigh, what an unfortunate word.

Loved it, but did not like the tragic ending. If you like period movies, this one is great!!!
