Annie Marlow has been through the worst. Rocked by tragedy, she heads to the one place that makes her happy: Oceanside in the Pacific Northwest, the destination of many family vacations when Annie was a teenager. Once there, Annie begins to restore her broken spirit, thanks, in part, to the folks she meets: a local painter, Keaton, whose large frame is equal to his big heart--and who helps Annie fix up her rental cottage by the sea; Mellie, the reclusive, prickly landlord Annie is determined to befriend; and Britt, a teenager with a terrible secret. But it is Keaton to whom Annie feels most drawn. His quiet, peaceful nature offers her both comfort and reprieve from her grief, and the two begin to grow closer. Then events threaten to undo the idyll Annie has longed for. And when the opportunity of a lifetime lands in her lap, she is torn between the excitement of a new journey toward success and the safe and secure arms of the haven--and the man--she's come to call home. In this heartwarming tale, Annie finds that the surest way to fix what is damaged within is to help others rise above their pain and find a way to heal.

This was such a sweet story. I didn’t want it to end.

Those of us who read Debbie Macomber always know what we're going to get when we first open the cover of her books, but we don't ever anticipate how wonderfully we are going to get what we know to expect.

The premise of 'Cottage by the Sea' started with a true, horrific and difficult topic, especially to those of us in the Seattle area, the 2014 Oso tragedy and its reverberating effects. I applaud Debbie for tackling it, and tackling it with grace and gentleness. It could not have been easy, just as it was not easy to be reminded of it for those of us so near.

'Cottage by the Sea' is the story of tender hearts guarding themselves fiercely. You will have tears.

5 stars.

Cottage By the Sea did not disappoint. A lovely story with good, lovable characters and a strong story line. An easy read that was a straight forward story as only Debbie Macolmer can tell.

3 Stars - I recommend if you like Debbie Macomber, and you don't mind the dramatic ones.

Annie's entire family died in a mudslide, while picking up the pieces of her life, she decides to move to the town that was her "happy place." Oceanside is just as she remembers it from her family vacations, and she begins building a life there. Keaton rarely speaks, a product of his father's abuse. When he meets a girl on the beach and she doesn't shun him, he remembers her forever. Now she's back in Oceanside, and he can't let her get away again. Can Annie and Keaton overcome their troubled pasts and start a future together?

This one is a little bit heavier than some of Macomber's stories, which isn't my favorite variety. I expected it to have heavy bits, but then fall into the sunny, hopeful pattern that her books often do. This one stayed pretty dramatic. This story deals with tragic death, abuse, teen pregnancy, agoraphobia, animal abuse, and hospice. It's not a light book. I was hoping for a bit more levity inbetween the issues, and as the characters overcome them. It felt like one thing after another. This wasn't my favorite Macomber book. I did like the characters, the found family aspect, and the little town of Oceanside. I liked Keaton a lot, it's unusual for Macomber's stories to feature a male lead that isn't super confident. It was kind of a nice change. Overall I can only recommend if you enjoy her more dramatic books.

Cottage by the Sea was inspired by the landslide in Oso, WA. Annie Marlow was a physician's assistant in California. Her mother desperately wanted her to come home to Seattle to celebrate Thanksgiving with her family. Her brother and sister-in-law and their baby Bella would be there.

Annie, however, had plans to celebrate the holiday with her cousin Grace and intended to go home for Christmas instead. Early Thanksgiving morning, a landslide sent dozens of homes into Puget Sound including her parents'. Annie was overwhelmed by survivor's guilt and grief. Her cousin Grace encouraged her to go to her happy place which Annie realized was Oceanside.

Cottage by the Sea is better than most of Debbie Macomber's recent efforts. My sense is that she likely tapped into her own grief caused by her son's suicide a few years ago. She writes with considerable empathy for everyone but women experiencing domestic violence. She clearly has no clue that sometimes it is safer to stay than to leave.
