You're the queen, and it's the queen's house, and whatever Brigan may accomplish, he's highly unlikely ever to be queen.
Dear Brigan, she thought to herself. People want incongruous, impossible things. Horses do, too.
There will be no yelling at people who are bleeding themselves to unconsciousness.
SummaryAdd a Summary
Fire lives in the land of the Dells and she is a monster. In Dells, there are monsters and regular animals. Monster animals constantly try to overcome the human mind, but most men and women in Dells have learned how to protect their minds. There were only 2 human monsters, Fire and her dad Cansrel. Cansrel was a dangerous being who did very bad things. Fire is very different, and is trying very hard to not be her father. Lord Archer is Fire's jealous lover. On the other hand, there is a land (or rather 7 kingdoms) that Dell doesn't yet know about which contains Gracelings. Gracelings are humans with 2 different colored eyes and are born with a special skill, such as an extremely good swimmer or an expert mathematician, a great soldier, or occasionally...a mind reader. In the beginning of the book, a boy is introduced as Immiker who is from the 7 kingdoms and when Fire meets him eventually, he proves to be a bad human. This is because he is a Graceling with the power to spread lies that other people will spread and believe with only confusion left behind. Back on Fire's side, the royal family calls her to court because a series of men have been killed in the dungeons, each with a single arrow, which means that it must be a very good archer, opposed to the royal family. This becomes extremely important because the Dells are on the brink of a war with other lords, such as Lord Mydogg and Lord Gentian.
Fire is the last human monster alive and everyday is a fight, with herself and others, to hold on to the little piece of comfort she's found. Monsters are beautiful and their beauty gives them the ability to control anyone they want. Although Fire knows not to use her ability for wrong doing, she is hated and feared by almost everyone in the Dells. Now Fire is traveling away from the comfort and safety of her home in the woods and onto a journey that could change everything.
Fire is no ordinary girl. She is part monster. A creature so beautiful that most people can't control themselves. Fire travels to the king's city to aid him in the upcoming war. But when she meets Brigan. She is reminded of her fathers cold eyes. She has to decide between helping her kingdom or her friend.
This is the prequel to Graceling. The second in the Seven Kingdoms series.
