Famine, Death, War, and Pestilence: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the harbingers of Armageddon -- these are our guides through the Wastelands... From the Book of Revelations to The Road Warrior; from A Canticle for Leibowitz to The Road, storytellers have long imagined the end of the world, weaving tales of catastrophe, chaos, and calamity. Gathering together the best post-apocalyptic literature of the last two decades from many of today's most renowned authors of speculative fiction, including George R.R. Martin, Gene Wolfe, Orson Scott Card, Carol Emshwiller, Jonathan Lethem, Octavia E. Butler, and Stephen King, Wastelands explores the scientific, psychological, and philosophical questions of what it means to remain human in the wake of Armageddon.

I guess I was disappointed with a majority of the stories because my definition of an "Apocalypse" and some of the author's definitions were at variance. I think an Apocalypse means there won't be Semi Trucks driving around, Elementary Schools functioning, Cigarette factories putting out death-sticks, or (especially) an Internet! If you are like me in this, skip all but "A Song Before Sunset", "Dark, Dark were the Tunnels", and "Never Despair." That leaves you much of the book that is drivel.

There are several very good short stories in this anthology and in the back of the book it gives reference to a great many more books to read of the same genre.

a few short stories were really good. well worth the read. wished the library carried the full novels though.

i have to admit I expected something far different than what I got here. I was expecting depictions of the apocalypse, but in many stories, it had already happened the the stories were about those who struggled to make sense of it.
