Batman: Earth One is a unique reimagining of Bruce Wayne's origin story, interspliced with his first outings as the Batman. Author Geoff Johns answers questions about Batman's lore that no one's ever bothered to ask, including: 'What was Martha Wayne's lineage and how did her family shape Gotham?'; 'What did the Wayne Corporation manufacture to establish itself as such a powerful entity in the city?'; and even offers a 'definitive' answer to the murder of Bruce's parents, which serves as the baseline mystery for the plot. Johns uses these points to set-up this new version of Gotham he's created, and leverages them to develop a very real, gritty and politically (and morally) corrupt world that is in clear need of saving. The artwork also does a good job of conveying emotion and helps to tell the story in a visually impactful manner. Many classic characters like Alfred, Detective Gordon and Harvey Bullock are true to form and simultaneously revamped for this reimagining. New and original characters are also well fleshed out and refreshing additions that fit in perfectly with this new universe. The most rewarding aspect of this book is the world that Johns is clearly working to set-up in this updated and edgy version of Gotham. I look forward to reading Volume 2.
