I can’t do it. I just can’t. There is one glaring problem with this book that I just can’t get past: Kirit What a selfish little brat. It is incredibly difficult to get invested in a story, in a plot line revolving around this character. It’s hard to be sympathetic, or to even care what happens to her, when every choice she has made thus far is purely selfish. Incredibly selfish. Not the standard shenanigans of the young, not youthful indiscretion, absolute selfishness. Add on to that, she couldn’t go five minutes after her mom left without breaking laws. Not just violating mommy’s rule, breaking laws. With deadly consequences. She literally just watched a man die, get eaten by a partially invisible skymouth, and then she decides “screw it, I’m gonna stand on this here balcony and watch an empty sky!” Right in the middle of the migration season for these bad mamma-jamma’s! This is a chick that has grown up in this world, even if she has never been in the middle of a migration, she knows the danger of these things. She knows not only what the laws are but why the laws are. She witnessed it, literally, moments before she decides that she’s going to do whatever she wants. THEN – she has the opportunity to make sure no ramifications come for the people she supposedly loves. She can take the punishment all on herself, by becoming a well-respected and feared singer, or she can drag everyone else down with her. What does this selfish little twit decide to do….why of course, drag everyone else down with her. Possibly destroy their opportunities to advance, their reputations, etc. Not important, she doesn’t wanna be a singer she wants to be a trader. Shoulda thought about that before you broke the law and nearly killed your entire tower! I have no interest in reading a story about someone gaining perspective or growing up or whatever else shit direction this may be headed in. She should be farther along at this point so it feels like the book will just be covering her learning crap she should already know. DNF.
