No Country for Old Men is an instant classic the moment you watch it, but it is hard to even describe why on first viewing. The ending is very abrupt, and is perhaps the most unconventional storytelling among the greatest films of all time. The experience I have had with this film was very much the general consensus you will find: the film doesn’t really click on first viewing, but in retrospect you can appreciate the unique angle the film takes with it’s story. Not to say the pacing and general film techniques are bad, in fact they are consistently excellent. Also, the three main characters play equally important roles in the story, and their actors play them wonderfully. The villain played by Javier Bardem is the most memorable part, a mixture of the characteristics of some of the most memorable antagonists in film. His cold-bloodedness creates a dark, unforgiving atmosphere for the other two characters to witness and fall victim to. If you cannot handle the dark themes and violence, you will not enjoy this film. I would recommend it with the background knowledge that the ending may make or break the experience. 4 / 5 stars @simplyenough of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board
