I much prefer the author's Joe Pickett series. The characters in this novel seemed to me to be stereotypical. Also, it was hard to believe the female character could be a successful PI - not thorough in doing background checks, fumbling, not fearless. I didn't find her to be feisty as one character describes her. Parts were predictable and the twist at the end just didn't seem probable. Indeed the author's machinations are evident throughout the book. Yet this book was a starred review by the major reviewing journals. This book is based on one rancher family gone bad, who live in Montana's Bitterroot Valley.
