This is a book that I don't think anyone can like. A woman who cared for a mentally ill mother for years after her father died finally cracks and kills her. Quite the beginning. The rest of the book takes us through the next twenty-four hours where Helen, the daughter, tries to decide what to do, and only manages to make us more disturbed by her actions. By turns she is manic and then so matter-of-fact you wonder if she really has killed mom. The narrative is both present tense and flashbacks of Helen's life, and as you read you come to understand the why of her actions. At least I did. I didn't come to like her or the book but I did come to appreciate her circumstances.
