I am a huge fan of Eva Ibbotson, and so are my two boys. We've read much of her stuff for middle school readers. Then I tried out her young adult/romance offerings and was quite charmed by Countess Below Stairs. However, this book disappointed me because Eva veers from her usually discreet and conservative representation of young romance, and suddenly has her young heroine basking in premarital sex with an older man! I had given this book to my niece before reading it myself, thinking I couldn't go wrong with Ibbotson, but boy was I embarrassed by this one! Probably ideal as a mother-daughter read, inviting important discussions!
