What an amazingly beautiful book! This has been on my to read list for years and I don't know why I waited this long. Every chapter is a little gem, full of beautiful descriptions of a time past that awakens the senses. Much like a time machine, you soon find yourself transported not just to 1928 but into a boy's life where discovery of simple joys is just a part of what lies ahead. I think this novel is like a bookend to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird as they both perfectly capture a child's introduction to real life by expertly drawing the curtain back to reveal the real world. Neither flinches from the reality of growing up and finding yourself.
